Neither, actually. A vanishing point is the last visible point on the horizon. The reference is towards the use of a vanishing point in drawing. In art class in high school we had to mark a point on the page, and make every single thing we drew in the scene line up to that point, so that all parallel lines come together at the vanishing point. I found the excersize very tedious and annoying, I hate measuring and planning things out in drawing, and don't like too many rules. However, art done this way can look quite interesting. For some reason the term stuck with me. Its always cool to look towards the horizon at the last thing that is visible, and try to see past it, since you know that so much more is always behind it.
