My stomach churns
Yet I am at peace
My heart is yearning
but I don't know what to do.
Why is sometimes what you want
The hardest thing to know
When your appetite is craving
But your mind says take it slow
People try to sell me rationale
I don't know what to do
I sometimes wish everything were easy
But then life would be boring too.
I'm ready to take chances
but what kind of chances should I take
A chance that isn't remotely safe
Isn't a choice I'm willing to make
So I just float on day by day
Waiting for something new
But everything always stays the same
Maybe this time will be different too
I hope I wish I deny I don't know
How far this life is willing to go
I want to do amazing things
So I take chances, I spread my wings
Sometimes nothing is ever enough
But I dive in, jump off the bridge
The water is icy
But the shore's not too far.

yay!
the whole idea of "taking chances" or even just putting in effort to get what you want, showing a little initiative, is far too uncommon.. people miss out on really great opportunities in life because they aren't willing to explore the doors that are left wide open for them.. life can be so much more exciting than most people realize.. and as routine sets in and doors start to close, only then do some people start to notice that they're unhappy.. just ride the go train at rush hour and watch as rows of miserable looking people go about their lives in a zombie-robot state.. only to go home and entertain themselves with television.. an immediate, short-term act of satisfaction that numbs the brain cells and simplifies life into stereotypes and silly dramatic extremities.. anyway.. total ramble.. but, that just means good poem! made me think..

i re-read it after commenting and thought of a completely different comment.. basically it triggered different images and themes for me the second time i read it.. which is awesome.. i usually try to do that when i write too.. if you're writing about one specific instance or feeling that happened and you toy with your words and imagery enough, you can make it broad and open to interpretation to attract a larger audience of people who can relate to what you're saying.. or with enough planning you can even write a poem to be about 2, 3, or 6 different ideas at the same time.. not that this poem is super complexly metaphorical, but it's cool because you can think about it in more than one way.. and that probably wasn't even the intention.

Thanks for your insight! It is a neat experience to expose yourself to the exact same thing more than once (whether it be a book, movie, poem, etc.) and gain a different perspective from it each time. Especially if years have gone by imbetween, and your perceptions of things have changed. Kind of like how a good perfume has different layers, so it will smell different to you even a moment after you smell it the first time. The great thing about music and poetry is that its meanings are often subtle enough that they are open for interpretation, so whoever is listening / reading tends to hear it as they want to, and their own feelings affect their interpretation of it. Things that are 100% clear in their meaning are often quite dull. I had hoped that no one would understand what this was really about, so I'm glad that you didn't at first glance. The main emotion behind it is a personal circumstance I felt pretty strongly about at the time, but I purposely kept it vague so people (at least those I know personally) wouldn't know what I was referring to. But I did stray away from my main theme and also reflected on the everyday choices to stray from the route that is comfortable and do something more dangerous (in different senses of the term) in order to really grow and experience things. There are a lot of things I do that my life would be easier without, but it is part of who I am and I love it so I keep with it, even though it is often a challenge. I suppose a comfortable existence often isn't the most satisfying, I've really expanded my comfort level the past few years and it has certaintly been worth it. I agree that life can be more exciting than people realize, I believe that we can all do incredible things with our lives, but some people are happy to continue within the lines of the ordinary. Of course sometimes simplicity itself can be satisfying, not all the time, but as a change of pace.
